Why Use Semmes Weinstein Monofilaments?

Semmes Weinstein monofilaments may seem like a simple device at first glance, they are critical to lessening foot ulceration in diabetics and ensuing leg loss from amputation. Diabetic patients with loss of protective sensation (LOPS) neuropathy are 6-7 times more likely to develop a foot ulceration.

When healthcare providers and patients can establish peripheral neuropathy, (loss of protective sensation), they can take the necessary safeguards to protect their feet and avert diabetic peripheral neuropathy foot ulceration. Semmes Weinstein monofilament wire testing has been widely adopted by the International Diabetes Federation, the World Health Organization and the American Diabetes Association in identification of loss of protective sensation (LOPS).

Semmes Weinstein monofilament testing is simple to use. In an American Diabetic Association study, the majority of patients (87%) can self-screen the test with high accuracy (ADA 1998).
