Treating Big Toe Arthritis with a Carbon Stabilizer Rigid Plate

Big toe arthritis is a painful foot condition that is difficult to treat conservatively. Using a carbon stabilizer plate rigid insole is often overlooked when treating. Limitation of the 1st MPJ (big toe joint) is also called Hallux Limitus and Rigidus. Most of the pain in Hallux Rigidus/Limitus occurs at heel lift which causes dorsiflexion ( bending up) at the 1st MPJ (big toe joint).





When the big toe (hallux) bends upward (dorsiflex) it should glide over the 1st metatarsal head. When there is arthritis in the big toe joint, the first metatarsal head jams into the 1st metatarsal head and a bony spur will occur on the top of the big toe joint (first MPJ). The 1st MPJ joint will also narrow and become stiff. Range of motion of the big toe joint will become painful. Over time, the 1st MPJ will narrow, become arthritic and painful.


Treating it with a carbon stabilizer plate insole will limit the painful range of motion in these patients with Hallux Limitus and Hallux Rigidus (big toe joint arthritis). Carbon foot rigid plates are extremely thin, about 2 mm thick which allows easy shoe placement. They are also simple to remove and place in different shoes. They usually are placed under the shoe's insole. Some shoes, the insole will have to be removed. The carbon material is rigid to limit forefoot range of motion. A typical carbon rigid plate will last several years. One can either use the carbon foot rigid insole as a stand alone treatment or in conjunction with other conservative treatments.

Carbon Rigid Shoe Plates


Rigid carbon inserts allow a patient to wear sneakers, boots after injuries or surgical procedures. The shoe becomes more rigid. The insert is fitted for either right or the left shoe just by flipping it over. Compared to steel plates carbon fiber inserts are 3-4 times lighter and doesn't rust as spring steel plates do. The carbon insole is only 1.2mm thick. The carbon fiber insert is placed underneath the sole. They allow athletes to play by providing support to the injured foot. It can be used for a turf toe, chronic injuries, metatarsal stress fractures, and broken toes.

How to use Carbon Stabilizer Foot Plates

Carbon stabilizer rigid foot plates are used to stiffen the sole of the shoe. This will limits the range of motion of the forefoot and midfoot to make the shoe non-flexible. Carbon insoles have a small amount of flex to but limits forefoot roll-off, and toe-off.



Carbon Stabilizer Foot Insole Plate features:

Extremely thin plates that move from shoe to shoe.
1) 2 mm (1/8") thick.
2) Plates are manufactured to limit dorsiflexion at the Metatarsal joints.
3) Immobilizes big toe joint (1st MPJ) to prevent it from bending (dorsiflexion) during gait (walking or sport activity).
4) Manufactured from medical grade of carbon fiber.
5) Dispensed as a pair. Use the carbon stabilizer plate on either foot, or turn one over and have two for one foot.

DIRECTIONS for Atlas Biomechanics Carbon Stabilizer Rigid Plate:

Even though they are thin (1/8"), they will take up some room in your shoes.
Remove the shoe's insole or place beneath shoe insoles/padding, not on top.
Try to slowly break into wearing the plate.
The first day wear the shoe while sitting for 1 hour and standing 1 hour.
Every day afterwards, wear them 1-2 hours more if comfortable.

Carbon Stabilizer Plate Rigid Insole Treating Hallux Rigidus / Limitus

Hallux Rigidus and Hallux Limitus are painful foot conditions that are hard to treat conservatively. When using a carbon stabilizer rigid plate, the big toe joint (1st MPJ) has decreased painful range of motion. Using a carbon stabilizer plate insole is often overlooked when treating these conditions. The difference in Hallux Rigidus and Limitus is the degree of limitation.



When the big toe (hallux) dorsiflexs and runs into the first metatarsal head, boney spurring will occur on the top of the big toe joint (first MPJ). The big toe joint (1st MPJ) joint will also narrow and become arthritic. Range of motion of the big toe joint will become painful.
