Sesamoiditis Treated with Dancer's Pads

Sesamoiditis is a painful foot condition on the bottom of the big toe joint. It occurs when the two pea-shaped foot bones called sesamoids and the surrounding tissue becomes inflamed. Sesamoiditis can occur from several methods. Some common causes are from trauma, overpronation, arthritis, ill-fitting shoes and overuse. Dancers, especially ballet dancers commonly get sesamoiditis from their use of the ball of the foot.

Conservative treatment of sesamoiditis includes physical therapy, ice, rest, anti-inflammatory medication and dancer's pads. Dancer's pads are foot pads designed to offload the big toe joint ( 1st MPJ). This will allow stress off the sesamoid to speed up the healing. Dancers pads for sesamoiditis are a ball of foot pads with the big toe joint cut out. These pads can be manufactured from stick-on adhesive felt or foam. Another type of dancer's pads is produced from a self-sticking reusable gel. Most of the time physicians will apply the foot cushion directly to the skin. The pads can be changed daily. Another option is to stick the dancer's/sesamoid pad to the insole of the shoe. This cushion does not need to be changed since it is already in the shoe.

Atlas Biomechanics is a woman-owned sports medical manufacturer of dancers pads for sesamoiditis. The most popular foot pad among our physician clients to treat the sesamoids is our felt 1/4" dancers/sesamoid pads.

Unequal Leg Length in Polio Patients Treated with Heel Lifts

Polio patients commonly have a short leg and or scoliosis that can be treated with a heel lift. This limb length discrepancy is permanent. Many post-polio patients will have lower back pain, hip, knee, and ankle pain due to the unequal limb length. Physicians can easily treat the patient's discomfort with a simple heel lift. Usually, a heel lift that is dispensed is about 1/2 the limb length discrepancy. The proper height depends on the patient's comfort level and how long they have had the short limb.

Heel lifts are placed on the short leg side underneath the shoe's insole. This allows the heel lift to sit firmly at the bottom of the shoe. This provides optimum control and comfort to the patient. In shoe heel lifts can be manufactured from cork and EVA/rubber blend. They come in different heights to correct the limb discrepancy.

Atlas Biomechanics manufacturers heel lifts here in the USA from medical grade cork and eva/rubber. They come in heights of 1/8" (3mm) heel lift, 1/4" (6mm) heel lift, 3/8" (9mm) heel lift and 1/2" (12mm) heel lift. An adjustable heel lift, that allows the heel riser to properly fit the short leg is a common type for polio patients.  The 1/4" heel lift is our most popular short leg lift for polio patients.

Varus/Valgus Heel Wedges can be used for Pronation or Supination

Varus/Valgus Heel Wedges can be used for pronation or supination problems of the foot and ankle. Heel Wedges are designed to help align the calcaneus (heel) during ambulation to limit excessive pronation or supination. They improve foot function by stabilizing weak, rotating ankles.

One of the most common uses of a heel wedge is for Pes Planus or flat foot. When used as a pronation prevention heel wedge, it can help prevent over pronation of the foot and ankle. Patients with Plantar Fasciitis can also benefit from the prevention of over pronation.

The valgus heel wedge is useful for patients with early medial compartment osteoarthritis provided it is used with an understanding of the indications and its limitations. Research shows that patients with early medial compartment osteoarthritis of the knee were treated with lateral heel wedges and were followed for a period of 7 years and 5 months to 12 years. Those who were treated with valgus heel wedges and analgesics showed a significantly greater improvement in pain score than those treated with analgesics only.

Atlas Biomechanics produces professional heel wedges made from medical grade rubber cork.
